India Congress demands resignation of Assembly Speaker
The opposition Congress in Karnataka today demanded that assembly Speaker Jagadish Shettar must resign as he had lowered the dignity of the office by indulging in cheap politics. Youth Congress state unit President Krishna Byregowda told reporters here that the Speaker should first resign and then take the plunge into politics. Instead, by blatantly taking side with rebels, he has brought disrepute to the state, he alleged. He warned that the Youth Congress would launch a state-wide agitation if the BJP did not brace itself up and rush to the aid of the flood affected. ''BJP came to power giving hollow promises that have been long forgotten after it came to power. Now, the leaders are fighting each other for selfish ends when people were suffering under the aftereffects of the devastating floods,'' he accused. He said ironically, at a time when the government should have fully involved itself in bringing relief to the affected citizens, it was fighting for its own survival. The administrative machinery had collapsed in the state, he added. -- (UNI) -- 07MS39.xml
