India Redressal mechanism against undesirable TV programmes needed: BJP MP
Expressing concern over the 'declining standards' of TV programmes in the country, a BJP MP has sought for a mechanism to redress the grievances and complaints against undesirable programmes. BJP Rajya Sabha MP Prabhath Jha in his letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, ''the increasing vulgarity in the television was a cause of concern for the people and these programmes could no longer be watched by the families. Many of these programmes were highly objectionable and completely contravened in cultural ethos and traditions.'' ''For the print medium, Press Council of India, a quasi judicial body, was set up as a watchdog of the press for adjudicating the complaints against the press relating to violation of ethics and violation of freedom of press,'' he said, adding that no such regulatory body was in place for the audio-visual medium. It was important that such mechanism should be available to the TV channels. The BJP MP said Doordarshan was becoming distant from the people and Prasar Bharati, the national broadcaster, should be given autonomy and manpower to discharge the responsibilities entrusted. ''The national broadcaster was failing to compete with ''unprofessional approach'' undermining its efficiency and professionalism,'' he added. -- (UNI) -- 07DI19.xml
