India Ms Shamim Mody honoured with Navleen Kumar award
Social activist Ms Shamim Mody has been presented with Navleen Kumar award for her contribution to welfare of tribals, dalits and unorganized labourers in Betul district of Madhya Pradesh. Cop J F Ribeiro honored Ms Shamim Mody, leader of the Shramik Adivasi Sanghatan and an Assistant Professor at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), on behalf of the Public Concern for Governance Trust (PCGT), Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC) and other organizations at the IMC's Walchand Hirachand Hall here yesterday. A N Roy, Director General of the State's Anti-Corruption Bureau, was the chief guest. Besides Mr Ribeiro, Mr Roy and Ms Shamim Mody, others who addressed the felicitation meeting included Mr Dara Gandhy, trustee of PCGT, and Mr Arvind Pradhan, Director-General of the IMC . The award comprises a statuette and a citation. On this occasion, Ms Shamim Mody said ''I accept the Navleen Kumar Award on behalf of the poor tribals languishing in jails in the past several months, implicated in false cases filed by vested interests. I was arrested and put in jail for 23 days from February 10, based on concocted charges. But I am convinced that we are making a difference.'' ''We will not let the corrupt forces to have a free run and to trample the voiceless tribals. Our war will continue,'' she said. Mr Roy commended the PCGT for launching programs to educate the public on the ways to fight corruption during the ongoing Anti-corruption Week, which started on November three. ''For every bribe-taker, there is a corresponding bribe-giver. In view of this, we should to educate the people about the evils of corruption,'' he stressed. ''I salute Ms Shamim Mody, who has been unrelentingly fighting for tribals' cause in the past 15 years in the interior districts of Madhya Pradesh. She has been treading on the path of the firebrand activist Ms Navleen Kumar, who became a martyr fighting for the rights of tribals in the Vasai-Virar belt,'' Mr Ribeiro said. In the past many years, the IMC was engaged in fighting corruption by educating the public in various forums. It had been printing the slogan '' Corruption is a Cancer'' in all its stationery. It had set up an Anticorruption Committee and also an RTI Cell, headed by Mr Ribeiro, for carrying on its war against corruption, he said. -- (UNI) -- 06BY28.xml
