India Rains beneficial to delta farmers
The current spell of rainfall in Tamil Nadu under the influence of North East Monsoon has provided great relief for farmers who have raised Samba crops in the delta districts of the State. The North East Monsoon, which was expected during the middle of October, arrived after a fortnight-long delay. But this had helped the delta farmers who transplanted Samba crops. Official sources said the incessent rainfall, which was expected to continue for another week or ten days, would be sufficient to meet the irrigation requirements of the farmers for about 15 days and they need not depend on water from the Mettur Dam. Following the rainfall, the authorities have reduced the discharge of water from Mettur Dam from 25,000 cusecs to 1,000 cusecs per day from today. The discharge could be closed in couple of days, the sources said. The reservoir presently had a storage of 37.5 tmcft of water. The inflow into the Mettur Dam was 6,500 cusecs a day and the closure of the reservoir for about a month would help store more water which would be required by the farmers after December 15 when the monsoon season would draw to a close, the sources said. -- (UNI) -- 06MS41.xml
