India Primary Articles inflation at 8.94 pc; food prices up
The annual rate of inflation, based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), in respect of Primary Articles stood at 8.94 per cent for the week ended October 24, with food price index rising by 13.39 per cent, according to official data released today. The annual rate of inflation in respect of Primary Articles was 8.67 per cent for previous week and stood at 11.73 per cent during the same week a year ago. The prices of potato rose by 100.82 per cent and onion by 49.91 per cent in a year, according to data. The annual rise in the index for meat, eggs and poultry stood at 25 per cent, for pulses at 23.45 per cent, rice at 12.19 per cent, cereals at 11.15 per cent, milk at 10.03 per cent and wheat at 7.47 per cent. ''As per the decision of the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA), the weekly release of Wholesale Price Index will cover only the Primary Articles and commodities in the broad group 'Fuel, Power, Light & Lubricants,'' the Commerce and Industry Ministry said in a statement. During the week, the prices of fish-marine declined by three per cent, fruits and vegetables by two per cent and barley and jowar by one per cent each, while those of moong rose by three per cent, wheat and bajra by two per cent each and condiments & spices and gram by one per cent each as against previous week. In the 'Non-Food Articles' group, prices of raw silk increased by six per cent, raw rubber by three per cent and castor seed, rape & mustard seed, raw cotton and copra by one per cent each over the previous week. However, the prices of raw wool declined by six per cent and those of linseed and groundnut seed by one per cent each. For 'Fuel, Power, Light & Lubricants' group, the annual rate of inflation remained unchanged at its previous week's level of (-) 6.20 per cent for the week ended October 24. It was 13.59 per cent during the corresponding week of previous year, data showed. While the prices of petrol declined by 11.86 per cent in a year, those of high speed diesel rose by 13.79 per cent, it further said.
