Govt approves upgradation of NH34 to boost ties with SA

The government today approved a Rs 1670 crore project for upgrading a major highway in West Bengal to improve trade links with Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh after the implementation of South Asia Free Trade Agreement SAFTA. The decision taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure (CCI), involves four-laning of the 102 km long Baharampur-Farakka section and the 78 km Krishnanagar-Baharampur section on National Highway NH-34 in West Bengal. While the upgradation of the Baharampur-Farakka section will cost Rs 998.79 crore, that of the Krishnanagar-Baharampur portion will incur Rs 672 crore. NH-34 is an important highway and the lifeline for North-South road transport in West Bengal as it passes through the state longitudinally and connects North-eastern States with neighbouring countries including Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. ''The traffic on this National Highway is expected to increase substantially due to the implementation of SAFTA among SAARC Countries (Nepal, Bhutan and Bangaldesh),'' an oficial statement said. Commercial traffic generated from Haldia Port in Kolkata and industrial areas in South Bengal heading towards North Bengal, North-eastern States and Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh is conducted only through NH-34. -- (UNI) -- 05DI27.xml
