7 farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha in 2 days

As many as seven debt-ridden farmers have committed suicide in the last two days in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, farmers' activists claimed today.

According to Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a voluntary organisation working among farmers in the region, the farmers included, two each in Yavatmal and Wardha districts, and one each in Amravati, Washim and Akola districts. The farmer from Yavatmal allegedly took the drastic step today, a VJAS release said.

Meanwhile, the Vidarbha Farmers Widows Association has warned that widows of farmers who had committed suicide would stage a hunger strike at Pandharkawada in Yavatmal district from November 11 to press their demand for a compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre for the damage caused by the drought. The association is headed by Babytai Bais, who had contested the recent Maharashtra Assembly polls from Wani constituency in Yavatmal district, but could not meet with success.
