India ABVP demands apology from Chidambaram
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) today demanded an apology from Union Home Minister P Chidambaram for ''keeping mum'' on a resolution of the ''Jamiat'' declaring that singing Vande Mataram is an ''un-Islamic'' act. The ABVP also demanded ban on the ''anti-national forces'' who served ''fatwa'' against singing the national song. The ABVP, in a statement, said it was ''unbecoming of a Union Home Minister to keep silent'' while such resolution was adopted in his presence during the Jamiat-Ulema-i-Hind convention in Meerut this week. ABVP's Kolkata unit president Dipankar Das said such type of resolution would encourage the fundamentalist and divisive forces as any opposition to singing the national song was a challenge to the sovereignty and integrity of the country. The ABVP also cited example of freedom fighters like Ashfaq Ullah, who sacrificed their lives inspired by the Vande Mataram during the freedom movement. The ABVP also burnt an effigy of the Union Home Minister at the crossing of College Street.
