Swedish PM arrives, will attend India-EU Summit tomorrow

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt arrived here this morning on a three-day official visit for talks with Indian leaders and attend the 10th India-European Union (EU) Summit tomorrow.

Mr Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, will also arrive tomorrow morning for the India-EU Summit. Mr Barroso wil visit Agra on November 8 and leave for Frankfurt from there. Mr Reinfeldt will hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh this evening on several matters of bilateral and global interest.

After the talks, the two countries will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in energy eficiency and bio-fuels. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha L K Advani called on him after his arrival and Union External Affairs Minister S M Krishna is scheduled to meet him later.

The Swedish Prime Minister will attend the 10th India-EU Summit tomorrow since Sweden has rotating Presidency of the EU. At the Summit tomorrow, India and the EU will conclude an agreement for cooperation in civil nuclear energy and hold further talks on a ''comprehensive'' Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The two sides will also hold detailed discussions on cooperation in trade and investment and issues related to counter-terrorism and climate change leading to the Copenhagen Summit.

He will later call on Vice-President Hamid Ansari and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The Swedish Prime Minister will visit Agra on November 7 and leave for Stockholm from there. Discussions at the Summit will be held in three sections including on bilateral relations, state of the FTA, climate change and energy cooperation at bilateral level. The leaders will discuss additional possibilities for cooperation in Research and Development and energy including solar and renewable forms. Global issues including terrorism, specially in the context of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and West Asia, will also be discussed.

The current global economic situation, G-20 results and further steps to be taken will also be discussed.
