Yeddyurappa begins discussions with rebel group
New Delhi | Thursday, Nov 5 2009 IST

In an effort to secure the future of his 16-month-old government, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa tonight began discussions with state Assembly speaker Jagadish Shettar, the chief ministerial candidate of the Bellary brothers who have declared a open rebellion against the leadership.

The Chief Minister arrived here this evening and had discussions with senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu and leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley who have been handling the issue ever since the differences became public last month.

Mr Yeddyurappa was accompanied by BJP General Secretary Anant Kumar in his meeting with Mr Shettar and were believed to have the discussions over a dinner at a five star hotel, party sources said here.

The Chief Minister's move to open channels for negotiation with the rebel group comes in the wake of he being assured of continued leadership by the party high command. Rebellion group has claimed to have the support of 60-odd MLAs among the 118 member BJP Legislature Party.

The leadership believed to have advised him to consider the genuine grievances of the rebels to win back their confidence.
