Debutant Mithun makes UP struggle
Meerut | Wednesday, Nov 4 2009 IST

A five-wicket haul by debutant seamer Abhimanyu Mithun had Uttar Pradesh tottering at 214 for 8 against Karnataka at stumps on the second day of their Elite group 'B' Ranji trophy cricket match being played at the Bhamashah stadium here today.

In reply to Karnataka's first innings total of 405, UP still required 42 runs to avoid the follow-on. In fact, the pair of Mohd Amir Khan and Praveen Gupta salvaged some pride for the hosts with an unbeaten partnership of 57 runs for the ninth-wicket.

The lanky 20-year old Mithun was on the fire right from the start and ripped thorugh the rather formidable batting of UP claiming five wickets for 63 runs. His efforts on his debut has left Karnataka with a possibility of an outright win.

Barring Mohd Amir Khan (50 not out), no UP batsmen could really settle down though Tanmay Srivastava, Ravikant Shukla and Parvinder Singh promised a good start. Amir struck seven fours in his 102-ball essay.

Earlier, resuming their innings at 372 for 5, the Karnataka innings folded at 405. Manish Pandey was the first to go in the very first over of the day without adding to his overnight score of 194.

UP seamers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shalabh Srivastava shared four wickets each but could not stop Karanataka to reach an imposing total.Skipper Mohd Kaif also disappointed his fans getting out on a nought.
