CSI Pvt Ltd announces launch of umbilical cord banking technology
Kolkata | Wednesday, Nov 4 2009 IST

Cordlife Sciences India Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of the Australia-based stem cell bank Cordlife Ltd, today announced launch of its umbilical cord banking technology in the city eyeing a pan-India presence by the next year.

''We are in talks with several medical institutes to introduce our technology for stem cell therapy. Starting from Kolkata, we target to make a pan-India presence in the next nine to 12 months,'' Managing Director Meghnath Roychowdhury said.

He said the company would spend Rs 30 crore on marketing after making pan-India presence.

Mr Roychowdhury said India having a current diabetic population of 14.9 million was a vast market which presently was of the size of 10,000-15,000 samples per year and growing at a rate of 40 to 50 per cent.

The umbilical cord banking technology has the ability to isolate two cell types to hasten the healing of general and diabetic foot ulcers or repair injured tissues and organs.

Cordlife, a leader in the Asia Pacific region, will provide the collection and storage of umbilical cord stem cells for customers over a limited time. Unlike conventional technology that can only isolate mesenchymal stem cells, the advanced technology can isolate both mesenchymal and epithelial stem cells from the umbilical cord. ''Typically, diabetic ulcers are very difficult to heal. With epithelial stem cells, the ulcers can be healed within 45 days,'' Mr Roychowdhury said.

The company has its facility at Diamond Harbour near Kolkata with a capacity of 40,000 cord blood units.
