India Presidency College ready to move out of CU
The Presidency College is on its way to bid adieu to the Calcutta University as the governing body of the college has decided to appeal to the West Bengal goverment to upgrade it into a 'Unitary University', a sort of autonomy. The governing body of the college met yesterday and took the resolution on demanding the government to immediately upgrade the college to a full-fledged university. It was also decided during the meeting that a written copy of the resolution would be given to State Higher Education Minister Sudarshan Roychowdhury. All the stake holders of the college have agreed that the college should be upgraded to a 'unitary university' on the line of Jadavpur University or Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). As 'unitary university' Presidency would not have the power to affiliate other college under it, like JNU and Jadavpur University, Pricipal Secretary of the college Sanjib Ghosh informed. Meanwhile, the goverment indicated that it was not averse to the idea. Mr Roychowdhury said, ''Let the proposal come to us. We will do any thing for the betterment of the Presidency.'' -- (UNI) -- 04CA18.xml
