JD(S) leader seeks K'taka Govt intervention in maize sale
Bangalore | Wednesday, Nov 4 2009 IST

Janata Dal(S) floor leader in Karnataka Assembly H D Revanna today threatened to launch a dharna in front of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa's residence if the state government failed to intervene in the distress sale of maize in Hassan district.

Talking to reporters here, he said the farmers were selling the crop following a glut in the market much below the Minimum Support Price (MSP) fixed by the government.

The middlemen were taking advantage of the situation and depriving the farmers of their remunerative price, he said, adding that the government should immediately increase the MSP to Rs 1200 from Rs 840 to rescue the farmers in Hassan district.

He said the farmers this year had shifted to maize, following the loss of potato crops last year due to pests.
