Pugilist dies under mysterious circumstances
Hyderabad | Wednesday, Nov 4 2009 IST

An upcoming woman boxer was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the Lal Bahadur Stadium here today.

The 19-year-old pugilist S Amaravathi, who was preparing for the coming National Games in Jamshedpur, was found dead with froth upcoming out of her mouth in her hostel room by police this morning after fellow sportswomen noticed that she had not turned up for breakfast.

The body was shifted to Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem.

Visiting the stadium, Sports Minister K Venkat Reddy asked the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) to conduct a thorough inquiry after the boxer's brother S Suresh alleged that she was harassed by coach Omkar Yadav, a former national-level boxer. The Minister asserted that anyone found guilty would not be spared.

SAAP Managing Director A K Parida told mediapersons that a high-level enquiry team had been constituted for a thorough probe, independent of the police investigation, to find out the causes and take steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future. The promising boxer had lost against Sunita Yadav of the Railways in the quarter-finals of the last edition of the National Boxing Championship for Women after knocking down noted pugilists from Delhi and Maharashtra in earlier matches, SAAP sources said.
