Stop Kerala for undertaking survey to construct new dam:Jaya
Chennai | Wednesday, Nov 4 2009 IST

Opposition AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today urged the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate steps to stop Kerala from undertaking survey for the building of a new dam across Mullaperiyar river and ensure that officials from the state freely visit areas near the dam.

In a statement here, Ms Jayalalithaa, taking exception to snide remarks made against her, said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi instead of taking dig at her, should devote more attention to prevent Kerala from going ahead with the survey for the new dam.

She said when the Kerala government was taking actions detrimental to the interests of Tamil Nadu, Mr Karunanidhi was busy in organising the World Classical Tamil conference to project himself as the saviour of Tamil language.

She said two days ago, the Kerala Forest officicals had denied permission to Tamil Nadu Public Works Department officials to take pictures in the Mullaperiyar area. However, the officials had given a free access to Kerala irrigation department officials to take pictures.

The Kerala government had also prevented the PWD officials, who had carried construction materials to carry out maintenance work at the dam, she said adding this clearly showed that Tamil Nadu would lose whatever rights it had over the dam.
