MDMK to organise protest rally, fast on Mullaperiyar dam issue
Chennai | Wednesday, Nov 4 2009 IST

The Opposition Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) would organise a protest rally and launch a fast at Theni and Madurai on November eight and 14 respectively to condemn the Kerala Government's move to construct a new dam across Mullaperiyar river.

In a statement here, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko said he would participate in the rally at the southern Theni district and would personnaly lead the fast to be held at the West Masi-North Masi street junction in Madurai.

He said the fast was to urge the Centre and the Tamil Nadu Governments to protect the State's rights on the Mullaperiyar Dam issue.

Mr Vaiko said, prior to the fast, he would address a public meeting at Theni on November eight to condemn the Centre for supporting Kerala on the issue by giving the nod to conduct a survey for construction of a new dam in place of the existing one.

Tracing the history of the Mullaperiyar dam row and the various Supreme Court orders and the Kerala government's failure to implement them, Mr Vaiko said the fast and the protest meeting was also being organised to condemn the DMK Government's failure to discharge its duties on the issue.

Accusing the Centre of betraying the interests of the State and Kerala of blatant violation of Apex court orders, Mr Vaiko said a dangerous situation had engulfed wherein Tamil Nadu would be on the verge losing its rights on the Mullaperiyar issue.
