Skipper Sumanth, Venugopal put Andhra in solid position

Andhra scored 215 for five against Kerala on the first day of the four-day Ranji Trophy cricket tournament held here today.

Captain B Sumanth and K Shabudheen remained unbeaten with 58 and four respectively at stumps.

Andhra openers H Vattekar and V Manoj Sai progressed cautiously and took the partnership to 46 before the first wicket fell.

Y Venugopal Rao excelled in scoring 69, studded with 12 fours and one six in 90 balls and Sumanth remained unbeaten with 58, studded with seven boundaries, had accelerated the proceedings and placed the visitors in a comfortable position. For Kerala, Sreekumar Nair took two wickets and Jagadeesh and Sony Cheruvathur bagged a wicket each. The former test cricketer Tinu Yohannan was economical in his ten-over spell without getting a wicket.
