Hyderabad | Tuesday, Nov 3 2009 IST

Sleuths of Commissioner's Task Force, North Zone Team, apprehended former Naxal of Janasakthi group Singaram Venkata Ramana for his involvement in a kidnapping and extortion case.

Three firearms, Rs one lakh cash, a TATA Spacio car, 2 cellphones and five SIM cards were seized from his possession, a press release said here today. Ramana, who joined Janasakthi at the age of 17, surrendered before SDPO Atmakur, Kurnool district in 2001. Initially, he worked as a driver and later in 2006 purchased an Allwyn Eicher and eked out his livelihood by running the vehicle on rental basis and at the same time continued his criminal activities . He kidnapped KMC Construction Project Co-coordinator Pradeep Reddy, undertaking the laying of 4 lane highway road on NH-7 in Kurnool town on October 22 this year. He demanded Rs one crore from the owner of KMC constructions but finally settled for Rs 25 lakh.

After getting the ransom amount, he released Pradeep Reddy the next day.

Involved in one murder case in 2000, and extortion cases in 2007 and 2008, Ramana was nabbed in the state capital where he planned to form a gang with surrendered naxals who were adept in kidnapping to make quick money. The accused is being handed over to Kanchanbagh police station, the release added.
