Visva-Bharati VC to meet Prime Minister tomorrow in New Delhi
Santiniketan | Tuesday, Nov 3 2009 IST

Vice-Chancellor Rajat Kanta Roy of Visva-Bharati, facing agitation from his teaching staff and employees on alleged corruption charges will, call on Prime Minister Monmohan Singh to end the impasse of the Central university.

The Prime Minister, also the Chancellor of V-B, had invited the VC to discuss the matter after scores of academics and high profile political leaders had sought his intervention to end the deadlock of the institution. West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee and former Lok Sabha member Somnath Chatterjee and many others had expressed concern over the impasse and sought the Prime Minister's intervention. The university of national repute had been virtually closed since October 24 after the professors, teachers, staff and students had joined one after another in the agitation demanding a high level inquiry into alleged theft of CD containing Tagore paintings and unpublished documents of the Nobel laureate.

Prof Rajat Kanta Roy will carry a resolution adopted by the Executive Committee, the highest policy making body of V-B, and apprise the Chancellor of the latest situation of the institution.

'' Save Visva-Bharati '' movement spearheaded by the professors' association alleged that the missing CD containing Tagore paintings was illegally handed over to a publishing house against a '' blank cheque '' and the beneficiary was one of the senior official of the institution.

Besides, there were numerous allegations, including financial corruption, nepotism, siphoning off funds, and misuse of OBC funds against the administration.

Meanwhile, the executive committee (local) today called upon the teaching staff and others to suspend the agitation for greater interest of the institution.
