India Contemporary music not rooted in reality: Palash Sen
Euphoria bands lead vocalist Palash Sen believes contemporary music is not rooted in reality and that all songs sound the same. ''Today's songs talk about fairytales and are away from reality. Our songs talk about real relationships because we come from middle-class backgrounds and have seen hardships,'' he told UNI in an interaction. Counting maestros like Gulzar, Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones) and Simon and Garfunkel among his influences, the vocalist opined that todays music was not being used appropriately.. On being asked about music as a career, Palash said, ''A career in music or for that matter anything requires passion. I admire journalists because they have the passion to write. But most people would think twice before opting for music as a career since it might not be a commercially viable option.'' The 11-year-old band recently released a song 'Zameen' to spread awareness about global warming. The lyrics focus on the changing seasonal cycles, melting glaciers etc. ''Everyone talks about spreading awareness on Cancer, AIDS etc but global warming should be a priority. The Earth is our mother and it is our duty to protect her,''he said. When quizzed about 'Maeri', counted among Euphorias most loved and popular numbers, the singer said, '' This song came during the phase when I lost my father. I felt I did not deserve to lose him so early. So, we came up with this song which was real and could bring a smile on everyone's face.'' He also stressed that all music directors, Vishal-Shekhar, Pritam sounded the same. ''Today, producers use music as a tool to promote their films. Music for the sake of music or melody can no longer be seen. This is not a healthy trend,'' he said and added it was because of this reason real talent and genres like Sufi or folk music were put on a backburner. ''It is not as If the youth today does not like Sufi or folk music. But the way our music industry is functioning, real talent in the industry is suffering. Producers will spend on music for promotion and not for the genuineness of music. We, as a band, try to blend sounds. But there are very few people who are willing to put money on us,'' he lamented. Thanking the Capital for its support each time the band performed here, Palash quipped, ''Delhi wants good music and can identify that. People say a lot of things about this city but the response to music here, in general, is always phenomenal. Most big names of the music industry today like Sonu Nigam, Kailash Kher, KK belong to this place.'' Talking about the band's upcoming projects, he said the band has performed a number for the forthcoming film 'Mumbai Cutting', a collection of 11 short stories directed by well-known names like Sudhir Mishra, Revathy, Rituparno Ghosh, Kundan Shah and Anurag Kashyap.
