CPI(M) urges TN Govt to implement HC order on cops

The Tamil Nadu unit of the Communist Party of India(Marxist)CPI(M) today urged the State Government to implement Madras High court order and initiate action against four police officials, who were indicted by the court in connection with the February 19 clash in the court complex.

CPI(M) State unit Secretary N Varadarajan, in a statement here said it was a matter of regret that the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, had euologised the Police force, couple of days after the High Court came out with the judgment, indicting the police officials.

The High Court had asked the State Government to use its discretion and place under suspension the police officers, including the then City Police Commissioner K Radhakrishnan.

The State Government should accept the court verdict and initiate action against the police officials without any delay, he said. Mr Varadarajan said it was natural for the opposition to condemn the police and demand action against the erring police personnel, whenever there were excesses. On Chief Minister's remarks that it would be detrimental to the society, if the police force was condemned for few stray incidents, the Left Party leader said, no one accuse the entire police for isolated incidents. They condemn only the "black sheeps" in the force, he said. The police lathicharge against Dalits in Kangiyanur, attack on party woman MLA and the bloody clash with lawyers in High Court would certainly not show the police in good light, he said.

Referring to the sudden withdrawal of the subsidy of Rs 30 given to single cooking gas connection holders in the state, Mr Varadarajan said this amounted to denying the poor whatever little relief they were getting after the centre hiked the prices of cooking gas last year. The Government should continue the subsidy and extend it to those who had more than one connection, he said.

Questioning Mr Karunanidhi's "silence" over the spectrum scam, involving DMK leader and Union Commuications and Information Technology Minister A Raja, Mr Varadarajan urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to drop the Minister from the cabinet and order a detailed probe.
