India CM's plea to PM on panel for classical language
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to direct the Human Resource Ministry to take immediate action to constitute a Standing Finance Committee for implementation of the classical status accorded to Kannada language. In a letter to the Prime Minister, a copy of which was released to the press here, he said the matter had been pending for the last one year. ''In order to operationalise and secure the benefits of the classical status, the Union Human Resources Ministry has to constitute a Standing Finance Committee consisting of experts in the field,'' he said. The benefits of the classical status includes two major annual international awards for scholars of eminence in Kannada, establishment of a Centre for Excellence for Studies in Kannada, and Creation of Professional Chairs on Kannada in Central Universities under UGC. ''However, the State could not avail the benefits since the Union Human Resource Ministry has not constituted the Committee,'' he added. -- (UNI) -- 02MS5.xml
