3 hurt as lorry falls into canal
Chennai | Sunday, Nov 1 2009 IST

Three people were injured when a brick-laden lorry plunged into the Buckingham Canal after a narrow iron bridge collapsed at Taramani Area in the city today.

Police said the old and dilapidated iron bridge, used by the locals as a short cut to reach Indira Nagar from the Rajiv Gandhi Salai IT Corridor, collapsed due to overload.

The bridge had been used by two-wheelers and heavy vehicles were barred from using it.

The 20-tonne truck was carrying bricks to a construction site when the mishap occurred.

The lorry cleaner, Vijay and two loadmen, Kanniappan and Raman sustained injuries and were admitted to the hospital.

The driver, Manjunath and two other loaders, however, escaped unhurt.

Giant cranes were pressed into service to lift the lorry from the canal.
