Police should not be faulted for some stray incidents: TN CM
Chennai | Saturday, Oct 31 2009 IST

Hailing the State Police for their excellent service in maintaining law and order in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said it would not be proper to find fault with the police and slap them with a black mark following some stray incidents.

Giving a clean chit to the police force, the Chief Minister, in an epistle to DMK partymen, said ''It will not be proper to find fault with the police and stab them with a black mark, discouraging them from discharging their duties. This will only be a bane on the society.'' Mr Karunanidhi showering encomiums on the police force assumed significance in the backdrop of the recent Madras High Court order, holding four top police officials responsible for the bloody clash between police and lawyers in the High Court complex on February 19.

The Court had directed the State Government to use its discretion and place under suspension, the four officials, including the then City Police Commissioner K Radhakrishnan, who is now Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order).

Though the Chief Minister, who is in-charge of Police referred to the 150th anniversary of the police force, his remarks on police could be construed as a reaction to the High court order, without making any direct reference to it. The Chief Minister, detailing the sacrifices made by the police force, listed their achievements in the last three years, after the DMK came to power in May 2006 in maintaining law and order in the State.
