India Centre ready to hold talks with Maoists if they shun violence
Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor today said the Centre was ready to hold talks with Maoists, provided they eschewed violence. '' As far as the Government is concerned, we are ready for talks with the Maoists if they abjure violence, '' he told reporters. '' Development and political freedom are definitely important. But violence is not acceptable, '' he said after paying floral tributes to former premier Indira Gandhi on the occasion of her 25th death anniversary. Describing the Maoist menace as a new phenomenon which the country had never experienced before, Mr Tharoor said the task to tackle the problem was on. '' We did not have such cross-border terrorism that we have now. We did not have such internal security problems because of the Maoists as we are having now. This is something new and we have to address it, '' he said. -- (UNI) -- 31CA50.xml
