India confident of becoming non-permanent member in UN
Kolkata | Friday, Oct 30 2009 IST

India is confident of becoming a non-permanent member in the United Nations (UN) for the 2011-12 term, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor today said.

''India is aggressively campaigning among the 192-member countries United Nations for the October 2010 elections for a non-permanent member. Kazakhstan is also contesting the polls,'' Mr Tharoor said, speaking at a symposium on the 'role of UN in a changing world' here.

''India has previously won such elections for more than three times. Now the country is concentrating for becoming a non-permanent member instead of permanent one in the Security Council,'' he added.

He said India had been playing a very important role in the United Nations by voicing its concern on climate change and terrorism, and providing peace-keeping forces and others.

''With a change in the world scenario, the collective responsibility of the UN has also increased. The role of the United Nations has become very sensitive. Focus should be given in such a way that even a small country's interest is looked at,'' he stated.

Mr Tharoor, a former UN official, in his first address after leaving the organisation, said the UN should have more scope to address the concerns of smaller nations with changed political scenario and heavy economic pressure.
