Punjab Govt moves out Sidhu's man from SSP Amritsar post
Chandigarh | Friday, Oct 30 2009 IST

Bowing to political pressures from various quarters, the Punjab Government has finally shifted the SSP of Amritsar Kanwar Vijay Partap Singh (IPS), who was considered close to local BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu According to an official release here today, Mr Vijay Partap has been shifted to Chandigarh as Commandant 82nd battalion of the Punjab Armed Police (PAP). His place has been taken by Mr P K Rai (IPS), who was incharge of the Special Narcotics Cell of the Punjab Police at Amritsar.

The transfer of Mr Vijay Partap was being demanded by BJP MLA from Amritsar North Anil Joshi and PSIEC Chairman Rajinder Mohan Singh Chinna and a number of other BJP local BJP leaders. Mr Joshi had launched an agitation against the SSP and had even started a chain fast outside Hall Gate.

Mr Joshi called off his agitation on Wednesday when state BJP president Rajinder Bhandari met him and assured that Mr Vijay Partap would be shifted. Mr Joshi and Mr Chinna had accused the SSP of being arrogant and functioning in a dictorial manner and ignoring the elected representatives of the people.

The two leaders had even gone to the extent of accusing the SSP of creating dissensions in the BJP. Mr Joshi even had the support of SAD MLA from Majitha, Bikram Singh Majithia, brother-in-law of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who holds the Home portfolio.

Mr Vijay Partap was appointed the Amritsar SSP, one of the most prestigious field postings, at the behest of Health Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla and Mr Sidhu. There had been pressures on the Chief Minister to shift Mr Vijay Partap in the past but each time Ms Chawla and Mr Sidhu intervened to save him.

However with a section of the BJP itself launching an agitation, the government finally got the opportunity to move him out.

Menwhile the government appointed Manmohan Singh, a PPS officer as AIG of the CID wing at Amritsar in place of Mr Rai following his apppinted as the district police chief. Mr Rai besides heading the Special Narcotics Cell was also looking after the CID wing.
