India Human Development Report (HDR) 2009 released in Mumbai
Human Development Report (HDR) 2009, a first of its kind Municipal report in the world and for the metropolis, was released by Mayor Shubha Raul in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters here today. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Raul said, ''The Report is useful for sustainable development of Mumbai and will help in making budgetary provisions for various developments.'' The report has been made as per the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) guidelines and with the help of All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSF), along with other experts. Though the report was ready in February 2009 itself, its release was delayed due to Code of Conduct for Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly elections. Commenting on the report, State Planning Board Executive President Dr Ratnakar Mahajan said, ''We call Mumbai as international city. We should think what we mean by that. How can a city which does not have availability of drinking water as per even national norms; infant mortality rate, organised sector employment not different than cities such as Patna, Lucknow, be an international city? To minimize the drawbacks in development there should be budgetory provision. The report is needed for the same purpose'' As per the report, birth rate in 2006 was 13.76 per cent, death rate 6.89 per cent, infant mortality rate 34.57 per cent and maternal mortality rate 0.63 per cent. The per capita income of Mumbai was Rs 57,729 in 2005-06 and Rs 65,361 in 2008-07. As per 2001 census, the sex ratio was 811 females per 1000 males. Former BMC commissioner Jayraj Phatak was also present on the occasion.
