India Trinamool to extend 'constructive' support to Congress
The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has decided to extend 'constructive' support to Dorjee Khandu-led Congress government in Arunachal Pradesh. The Trinamool, which bagged five seats in its maiden entry to state electoral politics this time in the October 13 assembly elections, along with NCP having five MLAs, is likely to go for floor coordination among their legislators and extend support to the Congress in the spirit of UPA government at the Centre, informed Trinamool Congress Legislature Party (TCLP) leader Laeta Umbrey. ''Being one of the major partners of Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, we have no alternative but to extend support to the Congress in Arunachal Pradesh. It will not be an unconditional support but a constructive support to the ruling party, based on issues concerning the people of this landlocked border state,'' he commented during a press conference. Though Trinamool's decision to extend support to the Congress came a little bit late in comparison to other parties, Mr Umbrey said the party was waiting for its central leaders' approval. He said Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee and central observer Mukul Roy, also the Union Minister of State for Shipping, who was accompanied by Sabyasachi Dutta, general secretary of party's youth wing, has directed the party in the state to extend support to the new Congress government in Arunachal. The party, during its two-hour-long meeting at Naharlagun on Monday, had unanimously elected Mr Umbrey as its Legislature Party Leader and MLA Tani Loffa as deputy and Kamthok Lowang as its chief whip, state unit party president Kito Sora disclosed. ''Unlike BJP, we are a totally different party. Our party is a part of UPA government. Since we could not achieve the required number of seats, there is no question of sitting in Opposition Bench,'' commented Umbrey, adding ''In the long run, the Congress needs our support in view of the coming election for Rajya Sabha as well as elections for President and Vice-President.'' He further informed that party chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has already made her mind to vociferously take up the China issue (concerning boundary question) in the Parliament session, starting next month. ''Trinamool will raise the issues like contentious Assam-Arunachal boundary matter, vexed Chakma-Hajong refugee issue, unemployment problem, law and order problem on the floor of the House for their solution once and for all,'' Mr Umbrey added. The party will also ensured to take up the cause of the people likely to be afected by various proposed power projects, for which the state government had already signed MoUs with several power developers. Besides prioritising its other agendas for quality education and equitable distribution of development in all parts of the state, Umbrey said the party would insist for setting up of study centers, counselling for meritorious students to assist them while facing competitive exams. -- (UNI) -- 28CA8.xml
