Aiyar asks elected representatives to prepare for LB polls
Mysore | Tuesday, Oct 27 2009 IST

Former Union Minister and convener of Rajiv Gandhi Panchayatraj Sanghatana Mani Shankar Aiyar today called upon the elected representatives to prepare for the local body elections in Karnataka. Speaking after inangurating the day-long convention of members of the panchyatraj institutions and local bodies affiliated to Congress in Mysore and Chamarjanagara district, he said nearly 50,000 members of the Congress party would converge ahead of the local body polls in the state. He said the Congress would sweep the next panchyat elections if the members were united and strongly raise their voice against the injustice meted out to them. Assailing the Yeddyurappa-led BJP government for curtailing the powers of the elected panchyat members, Mr Aiyer said Karnataka was the first state to implement the Panchyatraj Act. However, the state was going backwards following decentralisation of power by the BJP government, he added. Claiming that the Sanghatana would emerge as the strongest frontal organisations of the Congress party, he said the strength of the Sanghatana would touch 1.5 crore during the next few years. Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative assembly Siddaramiah, speaking on the occassion expressed dismay over the erratic power supply despites all the reservoirs being full. This was due to the mismagement of the Energy department and 'carelessness' of the government to handle the situation, he said. Claiming that the BJP government was trying to postpone the local body elections fearing defeat, Mr Siddaramaiah alleged that BJP does not believe in panchyatraj system and decentralisation of power.
