Children's development centre at blast site
Dhemaji | Sunday, Oct 25 2009 IST

Five years ago, ten innocent children had fallen prey to a bomb triggered by insurgents during an Independence Day celebration at the parade ground here. This site of gothic death will now be a venue for growth and innovation.

Ten children, along with three adults, were killed in an ULFA-triggered blast during an Independence Day celebration in 2004, shaking the entire state. A void was created not just in the families of victims but in the very hearts of the entire populace of the state. The grey tombstones of those kids at the parade ground are now being replaced by a state-of-the-art centre for childrens development. With the determination of turning the destruction into a positive message for all peace-loving persons, the people of Dhemaji decided to construct a state-of-the-art Children Educational and Career Development Centre (CECDC) on the very spot where the little lives were lost. The CECDC was inaugurated by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today. Pradipta, Aruna, Dinesh, Girin, Manjit, Rupa and their friends' memories would be preserved with a positive note in this centre, which stands as an embodiment of mans will not to bend down to death and destruction. Statues of all the 13 victims were specially made in Uttar Pradesh and have been installed at the entrance of the building, to remind the visitors of the dark side of terror. The main objective of CECDC would be to increase positive efficiency along with extra curricular activities of children by providing facilities like computer training, cinematic-preview theatre-cum-drama workshop, art and craft centre, Dolls museum, Conference Hall, library-cum-reading room, music room, auditorium with 300 seating capacity, Cafeteria, among others.

The project is the outcome of the collaboration of state government and Rashtriya Sama Vikash Yojana (RSVY).
