Party with difference needs surgery : Shatrughan
Shimla | Friday, Oct 23 2009 IST

After the Bharatiya Janata Party's recent debacle in assembly elections in three states and growing dissent within the party, prominent party leader actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha today conceded that all was not well within the party and it needed serious measure ''like surgery'' to set things right. Popularly known as 'Shotgun Sinha', for his bold responses, Mr Sinha, in town to attend a school function, told reporters that ''all was not well within the party. The party now needs a surgery''. ''As the medication has failed to check the raging dissent within the organisation, surgery is the only option left. We need to take tough actions and introspection,'' he said.

He admitted the party has again failed in the elections.

''We have certainly failed in the recent elections, still we have not learnt lessons.'' He also endorsed the views of senior party colleague Arun Shourie that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) should take charge of the BJP as it is facing leadership crisis.

''Since the BJP is an offshoot of the RSS, it has to adopt (take charge) the BJP fully. If the parents do not take care of the children, then who else would,'' he remarked.

On the leadership of L K Advani, Mr Sinha, who is the MP from Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar, said,''For me, Advani is the tallest leader. I cant comment on him.'' However, commenting on the expulsion of senior party leader Jaswant Singh from the party, Mr Sinha said, ''Return of Jaswant Singh to BJP would be in the larger interest of the party. The party has to take him back if Jaswant Singh has no hesitation. If he has not gone too far...'' ''Jaswant Singh was a founding member of the party. His expulsion has sent a wrong signal. My personal opinion is that if he returns, it will be in the larger interest of the party.'' Mr Sinha, known for his frank views, praised Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, saying ''He has a bright future and was progressing well. I think the path he has chosen will bear fruit one day.'' Mr Sinha also praised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying, ''He is one of the best Prime Ministers we have had. He is known for his integrity and honesty.''
