''Rahul deserves to be PM not UP CM,'' says Digvijay
Varanasi | Friday, Oct 23 2009 IST

Congress General Secretary and Uttar Pradesh affairs in charge Digvijay Singh today termed as 'wrongful' the projection of party MP Rahul Gandhi as the Chief Minister of the state.

''Mr Gandhi should not be showcased as UP CM, owing to the international recognition he carries,'' Mr Singh said addresing journalists here.

He possessed all the qualities required to lead the nation and be the Prime Minister, the senior Congress leader added.

''The Amethi MP is not running after power, but going among the people to get familiar with their problems,'' he asserted.

Reproaching the Mayawati-led ruling Bahujan Samaj Party, he said the very people, whom she feared are now close to her.

On being asked about the dismissal of the state government, the Congress General Secretary said, ''it is a government chosen by the people thus, the Congress does not want to interfere in this.'' It would fall due to its bad functioning or be unseated by the people in the next hustings, Mr Singh claimed.

Further hitting out at the BJP, he said ''the saffron party is only accusing others in a fit of rage.'' ''The Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are perfectly alright when the BJP wins, but are disfunctioning when the party loses,'' the Congress General Secretary added.

He said the Congress was organising a membership drive from December 31 next. It was the only party which charges Re one as membership fee annually.
