Winners of 55th National Film Awards honoured by President

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today presented the 55th National Film Awards for 2007 with Tamil filmmaker Priyadarshan's 'Kanchivaram' receiving the National Award for Best Film while Tamil actor Prakash Raj getting the Best Actor Award for his performance in the same.

At a glittering ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, Ms Patil also conferred on eminent music personality Manna Dey, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award amid a huge applause.

South Indian actor Prakash Raj received the Best Actor Award for his sensible multi-layered portrayal of a weaver in 'Kanchivaram'. This is his second National Award. He earlier won the Best Supporting Actor Award for Mani Ratnam's 'Iruvar'. South Indian actress Umashree received the Best Actress Award for her role in Kannada Film 'Gulabi Talkies'. 'Gulabi Talkies' also received the Best Feature Film Award in Kannada.

Noted filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan won the Award for Best Direction for the Malayalam feature film 'Naalu Pennungal'. The film also won the Best Editing Award for B Ajith Kumar. Shimit Amin's 'Chak De India' (Hindi) received the Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment while the Aamir Khan-produced 'Taare Zameen Par' got the Award for Best Film on Family Welfare. 'Taare Zameen Par' also got the Award for Best Male Playback Singer for Shankar Mahadevan and for Best Lyrics for Prasoon Joshi.

The Award for Best Female Playback Singer was received by playback singer Shreya Ghoshal for her song 'Ye Ishq Hai' from 'Jab We Met'.

Master Sharad Goekar received the Best Child Artist Award for his role in Marathi feature film 'Tingya'. The Children's Film Society produced Hindi film 'Foto' got the Award for the Best Children's Film. Noted playright Feroz Abbas Khan's critically-acclaimed film 'Gandhi My Father', which explores the troubled relationship between Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and his son Harilal, received a Special Jury Award. Actor Darshan Zariwala, who played the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the film, got the Best Supporting Actor Award for the film.

The Nargis Dutt Award for Best Film On National Integration was received by Bhavna Talwar's 'Dharm'. The Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a director was won by Shivajee Chandrabhushan's 'Frozen'.

In the language category, Amrit Sagar's '1971' got the Award for Best film in Hindi while Rituparno Ghosh's 'The Last Lear' got the Award for Best film in English.
