Gau-Gram Yatra to protect cows, help farmers
Bhopal | Wednesday, Oct 14 2009 IST

In a bid to protect cows and bring smiles on farmers' faces, the 'Vishwa Mangal Gau Gram Yatra' was commenced from Kurukshetra in Haryana on September 30 and would conclude in Nagpur on January 17 next year after traversing about 20,000 km in 108 days.

The guiding force behind the Yatra and head of Sri Ramchandrapura Math, Jagadguru Shakaracharya Shree Raghveshewara Bharti told media here today, ''The famous spiritual leaders Sri Sri Ravishankar, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev, Mata Amritanandmayi, Shri Murari Bapu, Acharya Vidyasagar, Acharya Mahapragya, Swami Dayanand Saraswati and Sadguru Jagjit Singh have bestowed their blessings and support''.

Madhya Pradesh Culture Minister Laxmikant Sharma and Bharatiya Janata Party Senior Leader Meghraj Jain were also present.

''It is a joint endeavour of all saints, environmentalists, scientists, scholars. They wish to do something concrete for the protection and preservation of cows and farmers,'' he said.

The Shankaracharya said the world's biggest signature campaign would be launched with a motive to made the cow as India's national animal and impressive laws at national-level to protect cows.

''Crores of people will take part in the campaign and a memorandum with the signatures will be handed over to President Pratibha Patil in Delhi,'' he claimed.

He said as this Yatra would be carried out on main routes hence 15,000 sub-yatras would be organised to disseminate the message in every village. Later, these sub-yatras would be merged to the main Yatra, he added.

Describing Villagers as India's soul, farmers its light and cow its life, the Shankaracharya said over-dependence of fertilisers and machines led to the neglect of cows and bulls. It also turned land barren and forced farmers to commit suicide.

''There is no link of this yatra to politics but voluntary cooperation is welcomed despite of his/her political links,'' he quipped.
