'Akira Kurosawa among my major 'gurus'': Priyadarshan
New Delhi | Sunday, Oct 4 2009 IST

National Award winning director Priyadarshan, whose Tamil film 'Kanchivaram' won the award for the Best Film at the National awards for 2007 announced last month, has described Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa as one of his 'major gurus' in the field of cinema.

''I am very much influenced by Japanese fimmaker Akira Kurosawa. Though I have lots of 'Gurus' in the field of cinema, Akira Kurosawa is one of my major gurus,'' Priyadarshan said yesterday after inaugrating the Akira Kurosawa film festival at the Delhi International Arts Festival here. Describing the Japanese filmmaker as ''ahead of his times'', Priyadarshan said, ''Akira Kurosawa was very advanced for his times. In those days, he did multi-purpose camera shoot.

Priyan, as he is lovingly known in the film world, said Akira Kurosawa's films have been a source of inspiration for many filmmakers across the world.

Lauding the concept of the Delhi International Arts Festival, the director of comedies like 'Hera Pheri', 'Malamaal Weekly' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' said, ''We love our country and such kind of festivals will tell the world that we are not a slum.'' Priyadarshan, who has made a mark in Bollywood through his films 'Malamaal Weekly', 'Hera Pheri' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa', got the National Best Film Award for his 'Kanchivaram' at the 2007 National Awards.

The Delhi International Arts Festival, in collaboration with the Directorate of Film Festival and the Japanese Embassy, is paying a tribute to eminent filmmaker Akira Kurosawa through his films 'Rashomon', 'High and Low', 'Doomed', 'Sanjuro' and 'Red Beard' on Ocober 3-4.
