Sidhu ends self-imposed exile; criticises BJP
Amritsar | Saturday, Oct 3 2009 IST

After more than three months of self-imposed exile from his constituency , BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu returned to this holy city and lashed out at his own party. ''There are some leaders sitting on high positions in the party who can not even win a ward election. These people are making the policies and programmes of BJP which is very unfrotunate and damaging for the party,'' Mr Sidhu said while addressing the party workers and mediapersons together at the district BJP headquarters here. The flamboyant MP had not visited the city ever since the appointment of local leader Rajinder Mohan Chhinna as Amritsar Improvement Trust chairman in July this year.

Mr Sidhu had expressed his displeasure publicly over Mr Chhinna's appointment, alleging that the latter had worked against him (Sidhu) in the Lok Sabha elections when he was the BJP candidate for the Amritsar Parliamentary constituency. The BJP MP had tough time while contesting the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat for the second time consecutively and he had trailed by about 22,000 votes in Amritsar West Assembly segment alone, which was a stronghold of Mr Chhinna.

Mr Sidhu had contended that the appointment of Mr Chhinna as Improvement Trust Chairman would adversely affect the morale of loyal BJP workers in the constituency as they would see it as a ''reward for a disloyal party leader.'' Mr Chhina threw in the towel in duel with the former test cricketer and resigned as the Amritsar Improvement Trust chairman on September 30, paving way for the MP to return to his constituency.

He was later appointed chairman of the Punjab State Industrial and Export Corporation.
