India Toyota, Kirloskar launch technical education programme
Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), Indian operations and Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) network, have introduced the 'Toyota Technical Education Programme' (T-TEP) at the Father Agnel Technical Institute here. Under the T-TEP curriculum which has been synchronised with industrial training institute's (ITI) syllabus in the second year of the course, the first batch of 20 students will undergo the T-TEP training. Toyota dealerships will provide weekly on-the-job training for first hand feel on the car maker's technology and service systems over six months. TKM will extend this partnership to other technical institutes in the coming years to over 500 technical institute students every year through this program. Speaking on the occasion yesterday, TKM Commercial Division DMD Sekhar Vishwanathan said, ''This partnership will enable us to create skilled technicians. We wish to expose the students to latest service techniques used in the automotive industry, which will go a long way in creating industry-ready manpower.'' TMC and TKM will fund the project and provide T-TEP hi-tech training packages and Toyota service training manuals and materials. So far, 14 Institutions have been covered under the program in a span of three years after it was introduced in Mumbai, at the St Josephs Industrial Training Institute, Kurla. The project is currently being carried out in Delhi, Chennai, Hubli - Bangalore, Pune, Cochin, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Ghaziabad, Kolkata, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Lucknow and Indore. The programme will focus to improve the low skill level of the country's technical manpower in the Indian automotive service industry. Technicians are often not trained for repair and diagnostics of the latest models of vehicles available in the market. T-TEP plans to bridge these gaps by partnering with ITIs and jointly working with its dealers.
