Community Radio Station to start at Mahila SEWA Trust, Ahmedabad
New Delhi | Wednesday, Jun 24 2009 IST

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry today signed an agreement with Mahila SEWA Trust for establishing, maintaining and operating a Community Radio Station in Ahmedabad.

According to an official release here, the Letter of Intent had been issued to the Trust after recommendations of Inter Ministerial Committee and seeking requisite clearances from various Ministries. The radio station is expected to be operational within three months as per the agreement. With this, the number of CRS would increase to 49 in the country.

Mahila SEWA (Self Employed Women Association) Trust was set up on June 18, 1975 under the Bombay Public Trust Act. Its main goal was to organise women workers for full employment and self reliance. The Trust provides childcare, healthcare, insurance and also conducts trainings and seminars. SEWA started its community radio initiatives for building capacity of the women in the informal sector. The main objective of the activity was to provide useful information and education to the members in the remotest of the villages. The station broadcast programmes on different subjects like health, water, agriculture, animal husbandry, national and international events.

The programmes particularly emphasise on community participation, where professional experts give training to women at grassroot level. The Ministry encourages setting up of Community Radio Stations as they promise to provide an opportunity to local communities to express themselves, and empower the women, the release added.
