Nitish urges Home Minister to check discrimination against Biharis
Patna | Wednesday, Jun 10 2009 IST

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has urged Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to intervene into discrimination against Bihari students in Maharashtra and issue necessary directive to the state government to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

In a letter to the Union Home Minister, a copy of which was released to the press today, Mr Kumar drew Mr Chidambaram's attention to the incidents of discrimination against Bihari students in Maharashtra and urged him to ensure the prevention of such incidents in future.

Mr Kumar referred to an article published in a newspaper in Patna about the questions asked in an interview for admission to a law institute in Pune, putting Bihar in a poor light, and said such incidents were in bad taste and if not checked, the trend would have serious repercussions on the fundamental rights of citizens granted under the federal structure of the Constitution.

''The sentiments which have been aired by the Interview Board deserve strong condemnation. You will also appreciate the irony of the situation wherein an institute which is supposed to teach the law and is committed to upholding the law is itself acting unconstitutionally and against the law,'' Mr Kumar pointed out.

''Aspersions like 'Bihar is the crime capital of India' and 'people from Bihar come with an intention to commit crime' not only reflect an unambiguous anti-Bihar bias but also are far from the truth. Crime figures of Bihar are in the public domain - published and publicised. Even in the last nearly four years, there has been marked and appreciable decline in all major crimes like murder, dacoity, kidnaping for ransom,'' the Chief Minister felt.

''These irresponsible and unsubstantiated utterances have the potential of whipping up volatile sentiments on both sides which does not augur well for peace in society,'' he added.

''There is need to order a probe in this matter more urgently to sensitise all concerned about such attitudes which go against established civilised norms, are unethical, unpatriotic, against our Constitution and create hatred and disaffection amongst different sections of the people,'' Mr Kumar said.

''I urge you to have the matter inquired into, expose the persons who have indulged in this kind of behavior and ensure the safety and security of students, workers, other people who have come to Maharashtra or are staying there pursuing their vocation or earning their livelihood,'' the Chief Minister urged.
