Tribal boy married to a bitch to ward off evil spirit
Kendrapara | Wednesday, Feb 18 2009 IST

Sangula tied the nuptial knot with Kaloti in presence of 200 tribals in a grand manner, but only to save himself from evil spirit. Sangula, a one and a half-year-old groom, was married off to Kaloti, a bitch, amid the traditional pomp and gaiety of a wedding ceremony. All social rituals were also performed and the marriage was solemnised in a village temple. The bride was adorned with two silver rings and a silver chain along with an earthen pot as dowry.

The marriage was held at the tribal-dominated Patrapur village under Sukinda block in Jajpur district.

The tribal elders told the Sangula family to marry him off to a bitch to save him from being attacked by a tiger after they noticed a tooth emerging from his upper gum, considered as a bad omen by the folk.

The tribals believe that if a tooth grows in the upper gum at this stage he would be killed in a tiger attack. The child's marriage with a dog only could save his life.

The child's father Sanrumula Munda, however, maintained that the marriage would not prevent him from marrying when he came of age.
