Russian sailors of nuclear warship on buying spree in Goa Panaji | Thursday, Jan 29 2009 IST
Scores of Russian sailors belonging to the nuclear-powered heavy missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great) had a shopping spree today in this tourist state after they descended at Mormugao Port in South Goa. The soldiers were here after participating in the two-day biennial naval exercises code-named ''Indra'' with the Indian counterpart in the Arabian sea off Goa coast. Earlier, the Indra exercises used to be conducted in the Bay of Bengal off Visakhapatnam port in Andhra Pradesh which is also the eastern naval command headquarters besides being the submarine base for the Eastern Naval fleet. The Russian Ambassador to India Vyacheslav Trubnikov was also said to have witnessed the exercises which involved several difficult manoeuvres including destroying aircraft carriers for the benefit of the Indian Navy, sources said. The exercises gained signficance in the light of a slew of incidents of Piracy in high seas these days besides risks in maritime security including terrorist strikes as in the 26/11 incidents at Mumbai. The warship is likely to chug off Goa tomorrow for Gulf of Aden after stocking adequate replenishments. -- (UNI) -- 29DR74.xml
