AIR goes for Digital Radio Transmission Ahmedabad | Tuesday, Jan 20 2009 IST
The existing Short Wave transmitter at Khampur, near New Delhi, has been modified for Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) broadcasting and radiating at frequency 6100 Khz from 1430 to 1730 hrs daily on 100 KW power, AIR sources said. The primary expected coverage area of this system is in the radius of 800 km, the sources added. V G Malagi, with the R&D of AIR, New Delhi, was here for monitoring of DRM signals transmitted from Khampur and said the digital technology of broadcast has been launched after a series of test and trails for the last two years. He also held a live demonstration and lecture on this DRM technology at All India Radio- Ahmedabad under the aegis of Broadcast Engineering Society of India (BES) last Saturday. AIR-Ahmedabad station engineer Meenakshi Singhvi said, in her address, that Digital Radio Mondiale is a consortium of some 75 broadcast-related organisations, which had worked to develop a digital transmission system for the current AM broadcast bands. The DRM system provides an universal, non-proprietary, digital transmission system designed to replace, eventually, the current analogue transmissions in the LW, MW and SW bands. She explained that DRM has near-FM sound quality plus the ease-of-use that comes from digital transmissions and also offers great advantages for listeners. The quality of DRM signals witnessed by the audiences on receiver ''Morphy Richards'' were of FM quality, she said adding that the DRM will soon replace classic AM broadcastings with digital AM. -- (UNI) -- 20BY7.xml
