Sehwag visit warms the cockles of Velammal school students Chennai | Saturday, Dec 6 2008 IST
It was Virender Sehwag's day out at the Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary school in the city. The Indian Vice-captain and twice triple centurion was bowled over by the ethusiastic reception accorded by thousands of students of the school. The dashing opener was in the city for a brief visit to felicitate and encourage students of the Velammal school who had won laurels in various sports disciplines. He gave away sports scholarship worth Rs 21 lakh to 39 students. Lauding the Velammal School management for showing great interest in promoting sports among budding youngsters, Sehwag said this was his first visit to an educational institution in Chennai. ''I have been to many schools around the country as a chief guest but I can confidently say that this is the best school I have visited so far which encourages sports in such an enormous manner., he said amid loud applause from a packed gathering. "As a young kid I used to dream that someday a sporting hero like Kapil Dev would visit my school but unfortunately that didn't happen," said the dashing opener. But I feel elated to stand here among you'll and hope you get inspired in any little way. It actually feels like a part of my old dream has come true." Velammal Educational Trust Chairman M V Muthuramalingam also spoke on the occasion. He said, We invited Sehwag not only to honour him but also to motivate and encourage young sportsman who have bagged medals in different tournaments.
