Md Sporting players fight on eve of Federation Cup game Kolkata | Thursday, Dec 4 2008 IST
Ahead of their first match in the Federation Cup against Churchill Brothers in Group-B, chaos prevailed in Mohameddan Sporting club as players demanding wages allegedly beat up some scribes, who went to cover their practice at Rabindra Sarobar stadium in south Kolkata. Club officials held an emergency meeting in which it was decided that they would play in the tourney, Club Secretary Sultan Ahmed told UNI here. TV footage showed that Mike Okoro, spearheading a virtual rebellion against club officials for not paying wages for the past two months, had hurt a local television channel reporter. Tamal Mukherjee, reporter of Khela R Khela, had loged an FIR with Lake police station alleging Mike Okoro had manhandled him. Okoro, a Nigerian and also captain of Mohammedan Sporting, yesterday had threatened not to attend at practice session until his due payment and other players was not paid immediately. But coach Shabbir Ali made them calm and had about one hour practice to honour the coach. Today the Md Sporting players had gone for practice at the venue but without playing they were returning after some talks among them in protest against non-payment, said a club official. While they were returning some scribes wanted to know if they were playing tomorrow against Churchill Brothers or any decision they have taken. Arguments followed and Mike allegedly manhandled a TV scribe, who suffered injuries. Police were called to disperse the scribes and players. -- (UNI) -- 04SPC5.xml
