Veteran actress and Bharatanatyam Artist Vyjayanthimala Bali will be honoured with the fourth Akkineni Nageswara Rao award for her contribution to Indian cinema. The award instituted by versatile actor Nageswara Rao, comprises a citation and Rs four lakh cash prize. Mr Nageswara Rao told newspersons here today that the award would be presented to her at a gala function here on January 10. Vyjayanthimala was one of the few south indian actresses, who shone in Hindi cinema too, he said. The past recepients of the award were evergreen Hindi film icon Dev Anand, actress Shabana Azmi and veteran Telugu and Tamil actress Anjali Devi. The award has been instituted by Akkineni International Foundation with a corpus fund of 1 crore. Considered close to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Vjyanathimala was elected on Congress ticket to the Lok Sabha from South Chennai. She was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha once. The popular heroine of yesteryears had acted in over 63 films after making her debut in AVM's "Vazhkai" in 1949. She captivated the film buffs elsewhere in the coutry also after this film was remade into Telugu and Hindi. -- (UNI) -- 29MS35.xml
