Aamir Khan to release "Amu" DVD on Aug 9

The DVDs of 'Amu', a controversial and multi-award winning film by Shonali Bose will be released by Bollywood actor Aamir Khan at Andheri on August 9.

Based on the 1984 Sikh riots, the film has achieved a number of national and international awards, since its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival in 2005, a release issued here said.

The film revolves around Kaju (Konkona Sen Sharma), a 21-year-old Indian American woman, who returns to India to visit her family and discover the truth about her past. She soon learns that the genocide against the Sikhs in the capital city over 20 years ago, could hold the key to her mysterious origins.

''Amu is a heart wrenching film, extremely well made and deeply moving. It's an important film, as it is very relevant to our times'', Aamir Khan said in the release.

The movie faced numerous production setbacks including last minute backing out of the production house and threats from local goons during the shoot of the riots scenes.

The self-financed film also tussled with the Censor Board, who cleared it with an 'A' certificate after 'six politically motivated cuts'.

Re-application for a new Censor certificate to enable the film to be screened on television, has also not worked out as the Censor Board and producer could not come to an agreement.

''We were asked to cut ten minutes from the film including any verbal reference to the riots. With such changes, the film is meaningless'' Ms Bose said.
