The overflowing river Ghagra has started playing havoc in thousands of villages in Basti, Siddharthnagar, Barabanki, Gonda and Gorakhpur districts of Uttar Pradesh. According to Central Water Commission (CWC), the turbulent Ghagra (Saryu) in Ayodhya was flowing 13 cm above the danger level. However, all other rivers were recorded flowing below the red mark. Reports from Basti said all in all 12,000 population was affected by the turbulent river in the district. Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) P K Upadhyaya said 15 villages of the Basti tehsil were presently affected by Ghagra. Boats were pressed into service for rescue and relief operations. In Gonda, denizens of the affected villages were migrating to safer places. According to reports, Ghagra was flowing 29 cm below the dangr mark in Elginbridge (Barabanki). In the last 24 hours, eight people died in the district in the rain-triggered incidents. Two people were burried alive in the tumbled down of a wall, while six others, including four children, drowned. Whereas, in Siddharthnagar, as many as 200 villages of Ghanghata tehsil were under the deluge threat. Meanwhile, the district administration had swung into action and ordered to vacate 44 villages of Harraiya tehsil and 16 villages of Ghanghata tehsil in Siddharthnagar.
