NC Hills burns, 11 killed
Guwahati | Thursday, May 15 2008 IST

The North Cachar Hills district of Assam was on the boil with the radical 'Black Widow' militants unleashing a series of terror attacks leaving 11 dead since last night.

Train and road service have remained suspended and life a come to a grinding halt.

In three separate incidents, the militants attacked a truck convoy killing ten, then attacked a railway train and killed its driver besides launching an audacious attack on an India Reserve Battalion camp but could not cause any damage, Assam police spokespersons said.

These attacks came in retaliation to the killing of 12 of their militants by the Army. The militants were angry as they had declared unilateral ceasefire for three months.

The first incident took place near Umrangso when Cement laden trucks were burnt and ten were killed there. While, the railway train was attacked near Mupa, the third incident took place near Harangajao, where some ammunition was left behind by the militants.

The incidents have triggered panic and the entire district was under undeclared curfew with few vehicles and people moving out on the road. Except the district headquarters of Haflong, life come to a standstill out of fear in the entire district.

The 'Black Widows' had vowed to increase the attack and the hapless state government reviewed the situation but has no contingency plan to bring the situation under control. ''We review the situation today,'' said IGP SB Khegn Sharma refusing to elaborate on the situation.

The district is completely mountainous and with limited road network the militants were having a field day. Already all the construction companies engaged by the NF railway as well National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) for railway and highway expansion have shut their shops.

Meanwhile, NF railway authorities have confirmed that they had suspended all train services in the hills section. The militants had targeted both road and railway construction sites and already killed 11 labourers in two separate incidents.
